Artist
Statement
The
current focus of my art is to create a new audience for my poetry by combining
it with other genres of art.
In collaborations between poetry and music,
I found a new audience with my CD, Unsounds, which used
improvisational jazz from Louisiana musicians to grab the attention of the
listeners. Additionally, in carrying the theme of appreciating everyday noises,
the CD contains a "found sound" component, incorporating sound samples from
around the world. With my ongoing digital collage project,
Illuminations, I have combined poetry with visual art,
particularly digital collage, and exhibited that work at shows as well as
showing the pieces on the internet. I now wish to create a cohesive film/video
project, combining poetry with that media, and smaller contributions of the
other media, to produce a short form video product "illustrating" five of my
original poems.
I believe that for the "quieter" arts to survive in an
overstimulated environment like our modern society, adjustments can be made to
its presentation to attract a new audience – one that wouldn't necessarily sit
down to read. If I can persuade people to experience poetry while listening to
music, watching a movie, or surfing the net, I will have exposed my art to a new
audience and that audience to poetry, as well.
